A collection of icons that represents the City of Ely, highlighting the key iconic symbols of the City. Eels playing a huge part in the local history, there was so many eels living in the fenland waterways that trade for eels was huge, it’s only recently that the last eel catcher had to end this tradition of catching eels. The most striking landmark in Ely and the surrounding area is Ely Cathedral. Its origins date back to AD 673 when St Etheldreda built an Abbey Church. The Cathedral can be seen for miles and is locally know as the ‘Ship of the fens’, it was also the backdrop to the Pink Floyd ‘Division Bell’ album cover.
